Orienteering
Orienteering Course Instructions
An Eagle Project by: Sy Thompson
This orienteering course can be completed with either the compass app on your phone and the digital instructions or a physical compass and instructions available at the ranger's station.
You will start the course at the sign. Right next to this sign, you will see a marker with a red fleur-de-lis design on it. There are 12 identical markers that you will have to find your way to in order to complete this course. Once you reach a marker, you will consult these instructions to find where you need to go for the next. Make sure you hold your compass level whenever finding the degree for the next marker. You will measure the feet you need to walk through your stride (how many feet you travel each step). A guide on how to find your stride can be found on the next page of these instructions.
How to find your Stride
At its core, your stride is how many feet you cover with each step. You will use your stride to measure the distance between points. You can measure your stride each step, every other step, or even in sets of four or five - whichever is easier for you to count. To help you find your stride, another marker has been provided 25 feet from the start sign. You will need to walk to it, and count how many steps it takes you to reach the other marker from the start sign. Try to maintain your normal pace; do not take extra large or small steps, just keep it natural. Once you find your stride, you can count feet for each step you take. For example, if your stride is 2.5ft per step, you can count 5 feet for every two steps (5, 10, 15…) or 10 feet every four steps (10, 20, 30…). Then, start walking in the direction of the next marker and keep track of how many feet you walk so that you end up exactly on the marker. As an intro, and to help you find your stride, please use the below Stride Point.
Stride Point. 25 Ft; 238°
(Turn your compass to 238 degrees then walk from the starting point to the stride point; counting your steps along the way. Then divide 25 by the number of steps to find your stride)
Course Directions
From the sign, point your compass to the degree shown and walk the number of feet shown. You will use this method to get to and from each point.
